I have recently been permanantly laid off and am getting
severance in May of 2008. I am planning to roll it into
a RRSP.I have applied for EI.Will I have to pay back EI
when I get my severance.Should I take my severance now
or should I wait until may. If I have to pay EI I may as well take it now.I have asked at EI about this and they say I have to pay if I take severance while on EI.What I
am wondering if I get severance after my EI runs out do I
Still have to pay back EI.Has anyone had the same situation I would
like to hear from you. Thanks In advance.

Hello there,

According to the Canadian Labour Congress website,

"EI and severance (separation) pay

Receiving severance pay can delay the start of an EI claim. The claim can be extended by up to one year.

Severance pay of two years means that no EI claim can be made for that loss of employment.

A delay in the start of the claim will result in an extension at the other end of the same number of weeks.

Severance or separation pay is paid out in a number of different forms. These different forms are handled differently by the EI system."
