Hello.

My husband came to Canada over a year ago and we agreed to apply for Permanent Residency from inside Canada. I am a Canadian citizen and have been approved as his sponsor and our application was sent to a CIC office in London, England, where he is originally from.

I have paid his RPRF and we were just waiting for the application to be processed.

Now my husband is in the hospital and I'm having a struggle applying for his provincial coverage. I have all the documents I need, but I'm missing a letter from CIC that states he is eligible for permanent residency.

I've contacted the CIC call center and they said they don't send letters like that. The letter I received stating I was approved as a financial sponsor should have been enough, but Ontario doesn't accept it as a form of proof. I've been sent back and forth between the two and not getting anywhere.

Should I contact London? I have tried sending them a message through their website, since I can't find a contact e-mail and I have had no response yet. It's getting very urgent.

Hello,

Thank you for sharing your husband's situation with us. We are sorry to hear this.

We can appreciate that you would both be very concerned and frustrated with this entire process.

We have received some experiences and suggestions from some other users who have also received mixed messages from both CIC and from ServiceOntario regarding OHIP eligibility.

You can find some examples here:

AIP for Permanent Residency via email

Sponsorship and OHIP

Regarding your husband's hospital stay, you may want to contact the hospital's accounting services or financial department to find out if there is an option for you to work out a payment plan.

You may also want to look into different options for interim health coverage. You can find some information in our our Settlement.Org How can I pay for health care in my first 3 months in Ontario, or if I don't have OHIP? article.

We are sorry that we do not have any additional information or suggestions to provide you.

I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions and if there is any follow up to your question/situation.

Hello. Thank you for this information. It's actually quite shocking to see I'm not the only one with this issue. It's actually a bit relieving as well. I thought I was the only one who would end up in this situation.

I'm trying to get my husband under my workplace insurance plan, but they said he would need an OHIP number. I'm looking at other possibilities as well. Unfortunately our bills are starting to total over $90,000 and still climbing. The hospital has offered to work out a payment plan, but this is ridiculous. If it weren't for my father-in-law offering to help me pay these, I would be sunk.
