Hi,

I will be going to Canada (Ottawa) in autumn on a 1 year iec work permit and will be applying for PR under the family class program. One year ago I applied at U of Ottawa for a Master degree and was accepted to study in January next year. But now I already got a Master degree from my University in France. Would it be worthwile to enroll? Do you think the chances to find work are higher with a Canadian university degree?
Also, would a study permit cancel my iec work permit?

Thank you in advance,

ch.

Hello ch,

Thank you for sharing your situation and question with us.

It is great that you are looking into this type of information ahead of time.

It is difficult for us to provide a definitive response regarding which would be a better option.

You may be able to find some basic/general information in our Settlement.Org How do I choose the right university or college for me? article.

Regarding your question,

Do you think the chances to find work are higher with a Canadian university degree?

As you may know, that with international educational credentials, in most cases it is necessary to get an evaluation done for education that was completed outside of Canada.

So this may definitely be another deciding factor in where you will choose to continue your education.

You can see some additional information in our b]Settlement.Org Where can I get my international credentials evaluated for employment? article.

Regarding your question about your IEC Work Permit and Study Permit, you can find some information on the CIC Website in the Can I hold a study permit and a work permit at the same time under IEC? - FAQ section.

Here is an excerpt,

Can I hold a study permit and a work permit at the same time under IEC?

Yes. You are allowed to have two valid permits at the same time under International Experience Canada (IEC). You can apply to participate in IEC if you currently have a study permit, or you can apply for a study permit if you currently have a work permit through IEC.

However, IEC is not intended for foreign youth who plan to study in Canada for more than six months during their IEC participation. If you intend to study in Canada for more than six months, you must apply for a study permit.

Once you arrive, it is best that you contact the Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) Call Centre directly once you arrive for some information regarding your situation.

I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions and if there is any follow up to your question/situation.
