I am currently 54.

My parents moved to Canada in 1967 I was 6 years when we came. I was wondering if I filed my application now would I be exempt from writing the test.

Or will I have to write it?

No - you aren't exempt. The rules for citizenship changed a few weeks ago. Only those 65 years of age or older are now exempt from the test. So you would have to write the test and pass it in order to get citizenship.

So does this mean the latest Discover Canada study guide is no longer valid?

The guide is still valid. The test itself hasn't changed - just the age rules.
