Separate Entrance to the Basement

Hi,
I have taken a basement on rent.
But there is no separate enterance to my basement.
The landloard comes to my basement whenever they want. I have asked them to put a separate door on the stairs of the basement but they are not listening to me.
Pls advise..What should I do?
I have come to Canada on PR with my wife and my child of 5 years.
