Hello,

My PR Card will expire next July 2015. I know that I should apply for renewal 6 months before expiry which is in January 2015. However, I plan to travel between December to February (dates are not confirmed) to visit my parents. I would like to know if it is okay for me to renew pr card in March 2015 when I return to Canada, which is about 4 months before expiry? Will I be question why I have not send in the renewal application yet?

Appreciate your reply soon.

Thank you.

Hello Min,

Thank you for sharing your situation and question with us.

According to the Applying for a Permanent Resident Card (PR Card) - Initial application, replacement or renewal (IMM 5445) - Guide,

Do not apply for a renewal of your current PR card if it is still valid for more than six (6) months (180 days), unless it is due to a legal name change. Otherwise, your application will be returned.

As per the Applying for a Permanent Resident Card (PR Card) - Initial application, replacement or renewal (IMM 5445) - Guide it states that you should not apply for renewal if it is still valid for more than 6 months. It does not state a PR card holder must renew 6 months before expiry.

You may want to contact the the Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) Call Centre directly for confirmation of this information.

I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions and if there is any follow up to your question/situation.
