Hi there,

I came to Canada in 2012 from Pakistan on spousal sponsorship.

In Jan 2017 I am planning to sponsor my parents, brother and sister who are under 22 so assuming that they all will qualify.

But my sister has wrong DOB on her documents like ID card etc. which needs to be corrected and it is a long process in Pakistan.

Right now her age is showing up as 23 years but she is 2.5 years less than that.

Before going into process of changing her DOB I just wanted to get your opinion on have you seen any concerns from immigration officers on these kind of cases or what kind of additional documents they may ask?

regards,

Hello,

Thank you for sharing your situation and questions with us.

You can find some information regarding this type of sponsorship in our How do I sponsor parents, grandparents, adopted children and other relatives? article.

It is important to note the definition of dependent child. Here is an excerpt,

Who is a dependent child?

Note: As of August 1, 2014, a dependent child must be under 19 years old (previously 22), according to Citizenship and Immigration Canada

For sponsorship purposes, a dependent child may be your own child or those of the person you are sponsoring. According to Citizenship and Immigration Canada, they must:

  • Be under the age of 19 and not a spouse or common-law partner; or
  • Have depended substantially on the financial support of a parent since before the age of 19 and unable to provide for themselves due to a medical condition.
Many settlement agencies can help you with your sponsorship application. To find help in your area, go to Services Near Me.

I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions and if there is any follow up to your question/situation.
