Hi there,

I'm getting married in August and have a question about assuming my partner's surname.

I would like to take his name but also keep mine, but am wondering if it's possible to do that without using a hyphen and just simply having 2 last names?

Or in that case would my current last name become my middle name if I add his surname to the end of mine?

Sorry if this is confusing.

I am in Hamilton.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Hello,

Thank you for sharing your situation and question with us.

You can find some detailed information in our Settlement.Org How do I change my name after I get married? article.

Here is an excerpt,

After you get married you have the option to change your last name, also known as family name or surname, to your spouse’s last name.

You can also combine both of your last names into a hyphenated last name or choose to take on your spouse’s last name as a second last name.

I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions and if there is any follow up to your question/situation.
