Hello,

I am a first generation Candian (naturalised citizen) who has now settled in the USA.

My daughter was born in Cambodia and has dual citizenship. USA and Cambodian.

I applied for her Canadian Citizenship certificate last November and got a letter saying that they will start processing it in January.

However, I haven't heard anything back as yet. When I called I was told that it has gone in for additional review.

Can you tell me how long it takes, when it's being flagged for additional review.

Reading the new laws after 2009, I know my daughter qualifies as I am considered a first generation, even though I wasn't born in Canada.

I immigrated and was naturalised as a Canadian.

I have a US passport too as I have being in the US for 20 years.

Thanks

Hello,

Thank you for sharing your situation and question with us.

We can appreciate that you would be interested and concerned about this process.

Unfortunately, we do not have any information related to how long this additional review will take.

If they are doing a special review related to their Quality Assurance Program, you can find some information on the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada website in the Application for a Citizenship Certificate for Adults and Minors (Proof of Citizenship) under Section 3 (CIT 0001) section.

Here is an excerpt,

Quality Assurance Program

Our quality assurance program randomly selects applications for a special review. If selected you will be asked to attend an interview with a Citizenship and Immigration official so that we can:

  • verify the documentation and any other information you submitted is accurate,
  • verify that your application has been completed properly.
Note: You will be notified in writing should your application be selected.

We hope that other users who have been in similar situations can share their experiences and timelines with you.

I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions and if there is any follow up to your question/situation.
