Good day!

I'd just like to ask for a couple of questions on this matter, please?

You see, I'm bound for Canada anytime soon and currently doing my research on my immigration.

Anyways, I've bumped on to this subject:

http://settlement.org/ontario/immigration-citizenship/landing-and-leaving/landing-in-canada/i-am-immigrating-to-canada-how-do-i-bring-my-belongings-with-me/

It stated that I may be able to bring some belongings with me, duty-free, provided that I own/possess them before going there.

I'm planning to bring my books with me. They're quite a lot, so they'll cost me much if I'll ship them there. But, if they could be shipped for free, I might as well grab this opportunity for new immigrants.

So here are my questions:

1. Could I bring my books with me duty-free?
2. Would I be charged just in case I’ll be sending my books over? If so, how much will it cost?

Hope to receive a favourable response.

Thank you.

Hello,

Thank you for sharing your question and situation with us.

Yes, in order to qualify to bring your items in duty free, usually you must have owned, possessed, and used the goods before coming to Canada.

In order to qualify, you will also have to fill out a BSF186 - Personal Effects Accounting Document, where you list any goods with you and the goods that you will send later. This includes the books you are interested in bringing.

It is important to note that if your goods are not listed on your original BSF186, they are not eligible for duty-free importation at a later time.

Unfortunately, we are not sure how much it will cost to ship these items. You will have to look into different shipping companies to find out what the costs will be.

I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions and if there is any follow up to your question/situation.
