Language Proof for Citizenship Application

I and my wife are permanent citizenship and planning to apply for the citizenship.
There is a requirement for English language proficiency.
Can you kindly advise as what could be used as an evidence to use as proof for that matter and help me understanding as if the classes are must to get a free certificate.
