Hi, I've been living in Ontario since March and now I want to apply for OHIP.
The eligibility section A says "You are in Ontario for at least 153 days in any 12-month period".

This means that I only can apply after 153 days? Or can I apply now and wait for the OHIP 3 months waiting period?

Thank you.

Hello,

Thank you for sharing your situation and question with us.

You can apply as soon as you have the documents that you need. However, you will not get a Health Card until you are eligible - after the 3-month waiting period.

According to the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, when you apply, staff will look at your documents to figure out when the 3-month waiting period starts.

You can find some helpful information in our Settlement.Org How do I apply for a Health Card (OHIP)? article.

I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions and if there is any follow up to your question/situation.

Hi,

I moved to Toronto permanently on 30th May and now I have the documents ready to apply so when I apply do you they calculate 90 days from my arrival date in the country which means I am eligible by 30th August? How do they calculate the starting date of the waiting period of 90 days? It is not mentioned anywhere or clear? My first landing was in 2016 but I moved here permanently only this year in May and trying to apply for OHIP now.
Appreciate some advise.

Thanks

Hi,

Thanks for the information but I have already gone through these links and could not find a definitive explanation on the starting date of the waiting period. I went to the serviceontario 3 times already and they would not accept my arrival date on 30th May even though I showed them the proof of moving with an original GOODS TO FOLLOW list stamped by CBSA with the date. This is very disappointing. Any suggestions on how I can proof that I am in Ontario since 30th May.
