my wife's Citizenship Oath Ceremony is scheduled for June 6

can we still cross the border and return with her PR card a week later?

how soon can we apply for a Passport after June 6?

how soon can she apply for dual Citizenship w/ Philippines after June 6?

does she need to apply or renew her Philippines Passport? (currently will not expired for another 5+yrs)

Hi there,

Congratulations and thank you for sharing your situation and question with us.

According to IRCC, once you are granted citizenship, you are no longer a permanent resident and your PR card will no longer be valid. Her PR card will be collected at the citizenship ceremony. To apply for a passport, you will need to show Service Canada the original copy of your proof of citizenship, when she is sworn in and has her proof of citizenship, she can apply for her passport with that documentation. You can find more information about how to apply for your passport in this guide.

While Canadian law allows you to hold two or more citizenships, you don’t need to apply for dual citizenship, and there is no related certificate. Canadians are allowed to take foreign citizenship while keeping their Canadian citizenship. Every country decides whom it considers to be a citizen. If more than one country recognizes you as a citizen, you have dual citizenship. You may want to ask the embassy of the Phillipines about its rules regarding dual citizenship and their passport application process as a Canadian.

I hope this information is helpful, please follow up with us if you have any further questions.

Sincerely,

Your Settlement.Org team
