Need to go to the USA...Urgently

Hello,

I'm writing this on behalf of my mother. She is a permanent resident. She applied for a PR renewal close to 5 months ago, but there seems to have been a huge backlog. Her PR Card expired December 22nd.

We were planning to go to Michigan on December 25/26th to visit her parents, and return on the 29th by private vehicle. We read that she could present an IMM 1000 upon return, but the issue is that she seems to be missing this document as she had received it close to 30 years ago.

She has an old passport which confirms she had received an IMM1000, but we have yet to find the document itself. She also has various other immigration documents, but not those ones specified.

Will a combination of any of these documents be sufficient for her to return to Canada?

Thank you for any help.

Assuming your mother holds a non-visa exempt passport, she can use one of three documents to re-enter Canada: (1) valid PR card; (2) IMM 1000/landing document; (3) valid travel document.

She can only apply for a travel document once she is outside of Canada and she should assume it will take at least 5 business days to process. So unfortunately the travel document is not a realistic option for a 1-2 day trip.

Hi, thank you for responding.

She is an American citizen, but has been living in Canada for the past 30 years. She has US passport, which would be visa exempt.

Would that change the circumstances at all? Do you think she can simply prove that she fulfills the residency requirements in order to be readmitted to Canada, even though her PR card expired?
