Topic:
Renovations on Illegal Basement Apartment we rent

We have been renting a basement apartment since Nov2015 and in fall 2016 the City of Brampton notified our landlord that our unit was not a registered legal apartment (something we did not know, extensive renovations had been preformed just prior to our moving in and we were told everything was code).

Landlord is now being forced by the city to do the necessary renovations that include having to do extensive work in the kitchen and the only bathroom in the place. We love the location and due to health problems with both my partner and myself when the problem was first identified we indicated verbally we were willing to work with our landlord as he worked out the renovation plan with contractors.

Well now we're nearly a year and a half later and of course the pressure is being put on by the CIty to do the renovations and our landlord suddenly wants us out of the apartment for a month (Which we in prior conversations said we'd be willing to try and find a family member to stay with because we really aren't in the physical state to move right now) but now also wants US TO PAY to have most of our belongings moved out for the renovations and for US TO PAY to store them offsite while the renovations are ongoing with their offer being to not charge us rent for the month of the renovations. His main reason that most of the apartment has to be empty is because of dust from the renovation, (we had already agreed to shuffle the stuff in the kitchen and common areas to allow access to the reno areas but not to moving everything out). Access might also be needed to all the outlets for an electrical inspection.

Trying to find out what are rights are in this situation has been hard and we're hoping someone can give us some guidance. Early research seems to suggest the landlord should have to put us up offsite during the renovations but we're afraid of course the landlord will just choose to try and get rid of us (Evict?) if we don't comply to his outline of how the renovations are going to happen by paying for movement and storage of all our stuff off site.

Thank you for any help provided...
