4/11/2018 Topic: Baby Born Abroad to Canadian Citizen + COPR Spouse desicpl	Hi, My wife is a Canadian citizen presently. She was NOT born in Canada and she is employed as a locally engaged person outside Canada. She immigrated to Canada with her family as a PR (her father applied for the family PR as a skilled worker). She has subsequently sponsored me, her spouse for permanent residency. I have been granted COPR but not landed in Canada yet. My wife (Canadian Citizen) is now pregnant with our child. The child will be born outside Canada before we are able to land in Canada. Once the baby is born, we plan to move to Canada. The child will be born in a country that does not need visa to Canada. All this will happen before the expiry of my COPR. I want to know: A: Since my wife is citizen(born outside Canada), will my child also be a Canadian citizen by birth since he is born abroad? Or will baby need to be sponsored as well before they can arrive in Canada? B: Besides informing CIC through their web form, what other actions must I take before we come to Canada? C: Will my COPR be affected or my permanent residency due to the birth of the child abroad? Essentially, we want to ensure the baby and sponsored spouse have no problems entering Canada. Travel before birth of baby to Canada is not possible since we have already identified doctor and made arrangements here. FYI: I have already done research on CIC website but I am confused, need guidance here. Thanks in advance for your help! 4/12/2018 Topic: Baby Born Abroad to Canadian Citizen + COPR Spouse desicpl	PMM! Thank you so much for your prompt reply, I appreciate it very much! Need some clarity here. You mentioned "4. Ensure that your COPR doesn't expire" We are planning to depart for Canada as soon as the baby is born. Time between expected birth and the expiry of COPR is only 45 days. Current application processing times for proof of citizenship is 5-6 months. Since the baby will be born in a country that doesn't require a visa in Canada, we are planning to travel with the baby's birth certificate and passport from country of birth to Canada. Once we land in Canada, we plan to obtain proof of citizenship. Of course we understand that the baby will be a visitor to Canada until proof of citizenship is obtained and will have to leave the country and possibly re-enter if the proof of citizenship doesn't come during his period of stay as visitor in Canada. Please let me know if we will need proof of citizenship for the baby BEFORE we enter Canada on COPR? Or can we enter Canada and then apply for child's proof of citizenship. Can the baby travel without his passport to Canada and just use his US birth certificate to enter Canada? Both the parents will be accompanying the baby... Is there a maximum duration of stay with the US Birth Certificate for a minor? Please let us know. Thanks for your help!
