My husband sponsored me under Spouse Sponsorship and I have recently gotten my PR status. My husband is under ODSP and his case officer recently sent me to see someone from the Ontario Works to look for a better job. This guy from the Ontario Works told me I can claim for clothing and what not from him.

But the thing is, when I filled out the PR form...I think there's a rule in which I am not supposed to ask for Social Assistance or my husband will have to pay. I already have a job just that it doesn't pay much. I am not receiving any money from the govt or whatsoever.

Unfortunately your options are quite limited. Being on Ontario Works disqualifies you from sponsoring your husband. If you wish to sponsor him, then you will have to stop taking OW and remain off OW for the entire period his application is being processed.

Alternatively (if you are unable to stop taking OW), your husband could apply to immigrate to Canada independently if he qualifies through immigration programs like Federal Skilled Trade, Federal Skilled Worker, or one of the Provincial Nominee Programs.

Good luck.

Hi

I am a Canadian citizen & I sponsored my husband to Canada. He is now a PR. I an no longer to work & need assistance. Can I apply for Ontario Works? I signed a Sponsorship Agreement stating that I am responsible for him for 3 years. The 3 years is not up yet. We have 3 kids. I know my husband cannot apply for Ontario Works. Can I apply even though I am financially responsible for him or will I be rejected?
