EI and Sponsorship

I am a sponsor for my wife who is now a permanent resident. I receive a letter in the mail a while back saying that I could not receive EI benefits if I am to be a sponsor.
My wife is due to give birth to our second child in two months and am wondering if I am eligable for EI payments while I'm on parental leave?
Or does this violate the agreement?
I phoned immigration but they said it's an agreement between me and the province of Ontario and I'm not quite sure who to contact next?
Maybe you can help me :)

Are you certain the letter said that you could not receive EI benefits? Sponsors cannot be on Ontario Works (social assistance / welfare) while they are sponsoring. However there is nothing preventing them from taking EI and sponsoring at the same time. I would verify that the letter mentioned EI and not OW / social assistance / welfare. You should have no issues going on EI.

Hello,
Thank you for sharing your situation and questions with us.
From information we have received from the Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) Call Centre, EI is not counted as social assistance since it forms part of your income as you mentioned, and it is something that you have paid into.
However, we suggest that you contact CIC directly for some additional information regarding your own situation and if this will affect this application. You can contact them here:
1-888-242-2100 (In Canada Only)
I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions and if there is any follow up to your question/situation.
