I have a client born in Cambodia in 1938.

She has been invited for a citizenship interview with a judge.

They have asked that she bring her birth certificate, but she was never issued a birth certificate.

Her interview is next week.

Any suggestions on what she should take or how she should proceed?

Will bringing a letter outlining the situation suffice?

Thanks!

Hello,

Thank you for sharing your client's situation and question with us.

According to the Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) Call Centre, it is important that she try and contact the Government of Cambodia in order to try and get her birth certificate.

This way, when she attends the interview next week, she can state to the Citizenship Judge that she has made an effort to try and get it from the Government of Cambodia.

The Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) Call Centre agent also suggested that she try and take whatever documentation that she does have available such as her passport and any other national identification.

You and your client may also want to contact the Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) Call Centre directly to confirm this information and for additional information.

I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions and if there is any follow up to your question/situation.
