How to show Proof for Auto Insurance?

I applied for auto insurance and they asked when I got my first license. I said it was 1988 or 1989 and they said they want proof, but the office in my home country just scratched its head when I called and said I needed some sort of proof. No computerized records prior to 1994 exist, they said.
Is this reasonable, that an insurance company in Canada can charge more if I can't prove I'm old? :-) I mean, how do immigrants prove this?

Assuming that you exchanged your foreign license for an Ontario license: maybe Service Ontario kept a copy of your original license and there's an issue date on it?
I'm surprised that the prospective auto insurance cares anyway. In my case, they just wanted to know which license (G1, G2 or G) I currently hold. A clean insurance record since 1986 didn't matter to them either since the driving experience was not gained in Canada or the US.
