Service Providers making copies of my PR card

Hi all,
I had met some settlement workers who insist on making copies of my PR card.
I am wondering: - if it's actually legal - can they deny me service if I allow them to just see and record my PR details, BUT not photocopy my PR card ??
I dont feel good about having my PR card photocopied by every other agency.

Hello,
Thank you for sharing your situation and question with us.
We can appreciate that you would be concerned about this. It is true that it is really important to be aware of how our personal information is being used.
From the information we have received from some of our settlement workers in various settlement agencies, the purpose of making the copies of the PR cards is mainly for the agencies' protection. This type of information is generally required in the event the agency is audited. This way, at audit time, there is proof of the numbers of clients the agency is stating that they are serving.
If you are not comfortable with having your PR card photocopied and stored, you can state that to the organization whose service you are interested in accessing.
If you are not comfortable with having your PR card photocopied and stored, it is not likely that you would be denied service or turned away.
I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions and if there is any follow up to your question/situation.
