Hi

My mom and I have applied for a Canadian citizenship from over 4 years. I was lucky enough to get mine, and things went very smooth with me. We handed all the necessary documents and I got the citizenship April of 2014. My mom, who applied a year after me, also received a letter to do the test and things were going great. She passed and things went smoothly too. We did everything we were supposed to do, and nothing was out of what was requested.

However, on October, my sister who lives in the UAE was getting married. So my mom and I decided to give her a visit, and help prepare for her wedding. (We are middle easterns, and weddings are very important, especially that she's my sister and her daughter). We had to prepare and help in so many things, including the invitation of our relatives from to visit too from abroad. Anyway, it was a big thing for us to see one of our family members get married. My sister already has the US passport because she was born there.

Anyway, while we were away, we asked our neighbors to keep an eye on our mail. If anything is sent out, first thing we'll do is for mom to take a plane back to Ottawa to attend the ceremony. We also relied on the website for any updates.

We kept checking the website daily, but nothing was changing and two months have passed since mom did her test and passed. Except that on the 10th of december, our neighbor texts me and says she found a letter that says mom's ceremony is on the 11th of december. We were shocked as hell. We checked the website but the website didn't have any updates!!!!!! It was unusual to not have any changes on the website. So not only did the website not provide updates, but our neighbor was late in checking the mail. We were very disappointed with her and this created a small fight between us and her because she lied about checking the mail daily, saying that it arrived a day before the ceremony, which is the worst lie ever, and when we asked her to take a picture of the envelope, it clearly stated that it arrived on November 28, 2014.....

Anyways, we told her to go 30 minutes before mom's ceremony starts and we scanned her a letter that explains the situation. But when she got there, they said they will not take anything documents. She told us that they asked her to fill a forum, checked mom as 'absent' i guess, and told her "we'll send her an invitation".. ((WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?))

My mom traveled today, December 14, 2014 to take things from there. She is planning to go the CIC office and explain everything. She also wants to check with post Canada about the letter. But we know it's impossible that it arrived a day before only.....

We are so scared they'd give her a questioner. She spent all her four years investing in this. Everything worked out smoothly and we were so close to the end. Are there any ideas about what could happen? any suggestions of what she could do?

Hello Hana,

Thank you for sharing your mother's situation and questions with us. It is unfortunate that it has happened this way.

According to a Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) Call Centre representative, it is important that a letter be sent to the office responsible for her file with the reason for missing the oath ceremony and with a request for a new appointment. They stated that it is important that this be done as soon as possible.

It is very important that your mother contact the Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) Call Centre directly to confirm the information we have received and to get some additional information specifically related to her situation.

I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions and if there is any follow up to your question/situation.
