Hello,
my permanent resident card expired 8 years ago, I never travelled outside of Canada, but I never renewed my PR card. Do you know if I will be able to renew my card, are there any consequences (legal consequences), can I lose my permanent residency? I want to renew it now but I am uncertain of what will happen if I do. Would it be easier to not renew and just apply for citizenship?
Thank you for your advise. Rose

Hi There,
Thanks for sharing your question and situation with us. We can appreciate that this is a difficult situation.
You may find our article Do I need to apply for my Permanent Resident Card? helpful:
Do I need a PR Card?
It is not mandatory that you have a PR Card, unless you are going to travel and return to Canada on a commercial carrier (by land, sea or air).
And as you have not left Canada you can find the residency requirements in our article What are the residency requirements for permanent residents (PRs)? useful.
Here is an excerpt:
"To meet these residency obligations, you must be physically present in Canada for at least 730 days (2 years) in every 5-year period."
If you wish to apply for citizenship, please be aware that the rules and requirements are changing. You can find up to date information in our citizenship article.
You may want to contact the Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) Call Centre for more information to confirm the information provided above.
I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions and if there is any follow up to your question/situation.
