Dear,
We have our PRs and due to family issues we had to stay out of Canada for a year. Now we think our OHIPs are expired.
We are having a baby in 6 months and we are coming back in 2 months. It means during months 5 to 8 of the pregnancy we will not be covered by OHIP.
Could you give me a solution if there is a possibility of urgent revalidation of OHIP or if we could use private insurance to cover the costs of these months ?
Thanks all.

Because you have been outside of Canada for such a long period of time, you are correct in understanding that you are no longer covered by OHIP. To once again have OHIP coverage, you will have to return to Canada and live in Canada for three months. There is no way to expedite this process. You must live in Canada for the full three months before you'll have OHIP again.

During this three month period you will be responsible for paying for all health care costs out of your own pocket. There are private insurance policies that cover pregnancy-related costs - however these policies must be purchased before the person is pregnant. Since you are already pregnant, private insurance is unfortunately not an option.

Thank you for sharing your situation and questions with us.

You can find some helpful information in our Settlement.Org I am pregnant and don't have OHIP. What health care can I get? and How much does it cost to get care from a midwife? articles.

I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions and if there is any follow up to your question/situation.

Private health insurance won't cover delivery and pre-natal costs if the person is pregnant. There is an option to cover pregnancy-related complications due to medical emergency up to 31 st week of the pregnancy period.
