I am a mechanical engineer from Ethiopia .

I am moving to toronto on a skilled worker immigration program in 5 months.

I have some experience working as a sales engineer for a construction equipment dealer and another time for automotive dealer in parts and service for a total of 10 years.

I hear that it is difficult to get a professional job as mechanical engineer for internationally qualified engineers.

what other near-technical-job options are available to consider till I get a professional job?

and is it possible to find a job before arriving there?

Is there other things to do to find a job while I am still here, besides posting my resumes on job search sites?

How difficult is it to find a housing to rent for a newcomer? ,

Will $ 10k help me manage costs for some months, while I am looking for job?

Sorry for the too many questions.

I appreciate any advise.

Thanks!

Hello,

Thank you for sharing your situation and question with us.

It is great that you are looking into this type of information before arriving in Toronto.

Regarding your comment,

I hear that it is difficult to get a professional job as mechanical engineer for internationally qualified engineers.

It is true that it is not easy to find work in Canada that corresponds with your skills and experience. You can find some helpful information in our Settlement.Org How hard is it to find work in Ontario? article.

Regarding your question,

what other near-technical-job options are available to consider till I get a professional job?

You may be able to find some helpful information in our Settlement.Org Alternative Jobs section.

Regarding your question,

and is it possible to find a job before arriving there?

It is true that it may be difficult to secure a job before arriving. Some of our users have shared that they have been able to find a job before arriving. We hope that they can share their experiences and suggestions with you.

From what we have heard from many of our users, a lot of times a first job in Ontario or anywhere in Canada may unfortunately be what some call a survival job, something just to pay the bills.

Some may wish to take a survival job because they can get some Canadian work experience and build a network related to their profession or trade.

The amount of money that you can earn in these survival jobs can vary. You may want to look at some examples in the Job Bank . This tool was previously referred to as the "Working in Canada" tool.

It is important that you connect with the nearest employment service as soon as you arrive. You can find some helpful information in this Settlement.Org Where can I find job skills training programs? article.

Regarding your question,

Is there other things to do to find a job while I am still here, besides posting my resumes on job search sites?

You may want to connect with different employment services in the area where you would like to settle in Toronto. You can find some services listed in our Services Near Me section.

You may also want to connect with other organizations that provide information before arriving.

Regarding your question,

How difficult is it to find a housing to rent for a newcomer?

It is true that sometimes newcomers have difficulty renting due to reasons such as difficulty providing certain documents or references. You can find some helpful information and suggestions in our Settlement.Org What documents do landlords ask for? article.

Regarding your question,

Will $ 10k help me manage costs for some months, while I am looking for job?

You can find some helpful information in our Settlement.Org How much does it cost to rent an apartment in Ontario? and What are the monthly living expenses for a family of 3? articles.

You can also find some additional helpful information in our Settlement.Org How can I compare the cost of living AND salaries between my country of origin and Canada? article.

I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions and if there is any follow up to your question/situation.
