All the members of my family are naturalized Canadian citizens, having lived in Ontario, Canada for five years. However, after attaining citizenship, we left Canada and our OHIP expired.

My two sons have now returned to Canada as full-time university students, but are having trouble getting health care.

As they are now in Quebec, OHIP has refused to renew their insurance, and Quebec has denied provincial health care because they are students. Because they are also registered as Canadian citizens at their university, the university assumes that they already have provincial health care and does not grant them their own health care.

Is there any way they can still secure insurance in this situation?

Since they were outside of Canada for such a long time and lost coverage, they will have to wait until they have resided in Canada for three months before they will qualify for health care coverage again. Once they have lived in Canada for three months, they should have no issues getting coverage. During the three month waiting period, they will either have to pay for any care out of pocket or purchase private insurance to cover themselves.
