I have worked for a non-profit organization with a union as a full time employee for 17 years.

My job has been terminated and I have been offered a part time position or a lay off.

I am wondering if I am entitled to a severance?

Hello,

Thank you for sharing your situation and question with us.

We can appreciate that you would be interested in this information.

According to the Ontario Ministry of Labour, an employee qualifies for severance pay when their employment is severed and they:

have worked for the employer for five or more years (including all the time spent by the employee in employment with the employer, whether continuous or not and whether active or not)

and

their employer:
has a payroll in Ontario of at least $2.5 million;

or

severed the employment of 50 or more employees in a six-month period because all or part of the business closed.

For more information, you can also use the Severance Entitlement Tool.

We have also had a similar question asked in a previous discussion thread here:

Fair Severance package from a Non-Profit?

I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions and if there is any follow up to your question/situation.
