Dear sir,

I got my Hong Kong driving experience for 6 years already. As I know, HK driving license is not reciprocal in Ontario, a letter of authentication is necessary to be provided. I have contacted HK government that they can provide me the record of my driving license including any accidents or traffic offenses but there is no wording mentioning my driving experience. Is such document already good enough to prove my driving experience?

In fact, I always drive with the car owned by others or my family. Therefore, I have no record showing my actual road experience. Please could you advise what should I do to fulfill the requirement as requested in order to exempt the G1 & G2 test?

Thanks

Regards,
Vicky

Hello Vicky,

Thank you for sharing your situation and question with us.

According to the Driver's Handbook,

Applicants are required to provide adequate proof of foreign licensed driving experience. However, if that is not possible, the ministry will accept an applicant’s declaration of their foreign licensed driving experience on the driver’s licence application for up to a maximum of 12 months licensed experience.

Additionally, you can find some information on the Ministry of Transportation website in the Proof of driving experience section.

Here is an excerpt,

You can self-declare one year of driving experience, by showing a valid, original foreign driver’s licence.

If you want to earn credit for more than one year of driving experience, you will also need an official letter from the foreign government or agency that issued the driver’s licence, confirming that the licence is authentic. This letter needs to be written in English or French.

You may also want to contact DriveTest directly to find out what your options are. You can contact them here:

Toll Free Number 1-800-489-8450

I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions and if there is any follow up to your question/situation.
