Hi

My son is presently in Grade 11 pursuing IB Diploma from Mumbai, India. We plan to relocate to Canada in May (we have our COPR).

We have written to the Public schools in Mississauga and Toronto area who offer IB Diploma, but none of them seem to be offering Physics HL or Maths HL or both.

He plans to continue his Gr 12 from the next academic year subject to our following queries being clarified.

1. While migrating from the IB system to the Canadian system would his grades be converted to a certain equivalence or would they be the same as it is in the IB?

2. After grade 12, while applying to the Canadian Universities or colleges: How do the universities or colleges compare the academics of a student from IB to a student from the local board. Are their marks/percentages/grades considered on par or is there a conversion?

Kindly do clarify this - based on this we have to decide whether he will continue his grade 12 in mumbai and then come there for further studies or complete his grade 12 in Candada.

Thanks

Regards
Shismi

Hello Shismi,

It is great that you are looking into this type of information before arriving in Canada.

It is difficult for us to say which grade you will be accepted into.

In secondary school, students usually take an assessment so that they can be placed in the right grade.

Generally, secondary school students who have recently arrived from other countries may have an initial assessment before they can enter a school.

You can find more information on enrolling in Secondary School here:

Newcomers' Guide to Secondary School - Public School Board

You may also find some helpful information in our Settlement.Org Which grade will my child enter when we move to Ontario? and How is my child assessed to start school in Ontario? articles.

You may also get some additional information on our NewYouth.ca website.

NewYouth.ca is your first link for accurate, accessible and easy-to-understand information about issues important to you - as a newcomer in particular, but also as a young Canadian.

I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions and if there is any follow up to your question/situation.
