How can my American boyfriend come to Canada?

Hi. New here. Not sure which topic subject to post under. Here is the situation. Dating long distance two years. I am married but seperated over 3 yrs. The divorce process is dragging on and on. My boyfriend and I wish to be together. Due to custody arrangements it is harder for me to move to the US with children. He is single, no dependants. What aside from marriage (our one day future goal but currently blocked) would be the best way for him to be allowed into Canada and to work? I realize in theory he could come for 6 months but even then immigration seems to give him a hard time just on a week or two visits and stamps his passport with a form saying he has to go back by such and such a date. We aren't looking to break any rules we just don't know how to get to our end goal of being together given the circumstances. Any insight would be appreciated. Thank you. I am a Canadian born citizen with dual citizen to the UK.
