Hi,

I am wondering if I can get my residence status just because my father is a permanent resident.

Does he have to apply for the sponsorship program?

I am 24 years old and I would like to become a resident here.

Hello,

Thank you for sharing your situation and question with us.

You can find some information regarding who is eligible to be sponsored as a dependent child on the IRCC website.

Here is an excerpt,

Effective August 1, 2014, Citizenship and Immigration Canada has changed its definition of a dependent child for its immigration programs. A dependent child must be under 19 years of age, instead of the previous limit of under 22 years of age.

You can also find some additional information in the Determine your eligibility – Sponsor your spouse, partner or children section. Here is an excerpt,
Dependent children
  • is under age 19 and does not have a spouse or common-law partner, or
  • is 19 years of age or older and has depended largely on the financial support of a parent since before age 19 because of a physical or mental condition.

In terms of other options for immigrating to Ontario, you can find some information in our Settlement.Org How can I apply to immigrate to Ontario? article.

I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions and if there is any follow up to your question/situation.
