Hi there,

I am a permanent resident of Canada, and have an Irish passport. My common-law partner, who is a Canadian citizen, and I are planning to visit London this winter. I have applied for my PR card renewal , but am not sure it will arrive in time for our trip.

If it doesn't arrive it time, we plan to drive to and fly out of Seattle.

Which specific documents will I need to carry when entering the US and returning to Canada with our private vehicle?

Thank you for your time, any info you can share would be a great help.
Kind regards,

Hello,

Thank you for sharing your situation and question with us.

You can find some helpful information in our Settlement.Org I need to leave Canada but do not have my PR card yet. What should I do? article.

As you may have noticed in this article and in the link from the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website, it goes to the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) website through the "other documents you can use" link.

You can also find some additional information in the ENF 4 Port of entry examinations Operations Manual. Here is an excerpt,

11.2 Verifying permanent resident status

The PRC is the only valid proof of permanent resident status in Canada.

The following documents are satisfactory indicators of permanent residence:

  • the original Record of Landing;
  • a certified true copy of a Record of Landing document issued by IRCC National Headquarters (NHQ);
  • a letter issued by IRCC NHQ verifying permanent residence;
  • a passport duly stamped showing the date on which permanent residence was granted if the person was granted permanent resident status before 1973;
  • a Confirmation of Permanent Residence form [IMM 5292B];
  • a PRC; and
  • a permanent resident travel document.
It may be best to contact the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) Call Centre directly for some information related to this type of situation.

I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions and if there is any follow up to your question/situation.
