Hello,

I got a temporary work visa starting from 30-Jan-2018 for a period of 2 years under Global Talent Stream. I have a contract and a job offer for unlimited time, permanent, full-time employment. We are a family of 5, my wife and I, and our girls age 7, 3, and 1. When we arrive, we will be renting AirBnB for couple of weeks until we rent something permanent and buy furniture.

Q1: I'm confused about that "be in Ontario for 6 months" requirement. I can apply for OHIP as soon as we have a permanent address, we don't have to wait to apply in August? (as in be in Ontario for full 153 days before applying). AirBnB doesn't qualify as an address?

We will buy private visitor insurance for the first 90 days (or more) needed to cover waiting time until we get our OHIP cards.

Q2: What are our options for children immunization (vaccination)? I've read https://settlement.org/ontario/education/elementary-and-secondary-school/enrol-your-child-in-school/what-immunizations-does-my-child-need/ but I still don't know what to do with my youngest child? In our home country our children have received all immunization according to our government schedule, which is a bit different than the one in Canada. My youngest daughter will be turning 1 on 11-Jan and we are not very keen on getting her MMR vaccine here, just 2 weeks before our trip because of possible (thou rare) complications. But if we can't get it in Canada in the first 3-4 months, then we would have to assess all the benefits/risks.

Thank you

Hello,

Thank you for sharing your situation and question with us.

We can appreciate that you would be concerned about this situation.

Regarding your first question, if you are referring to providing "Proof of Residency" you can find a list of what is considered suitable proof in our Settlement.Org What documents do I need to apply for a Health Card (OHIP)? article in the Proof of Residency section.

In most cases with AirBnBs, it is not likely that stays there are long enough to have this type of documentation including your name and current home address. This document is supposed to confirm that your principal home is in Ontario.

Regarding your second question,

Generally, if a newcomer to Ontario does not have have a record of their child’s immunization or they know that their child requires some additional vaccinations, they can contact an Immunization Information Line of the public health unit in the city that they are settling in to speak to a nurse for help.

Many public health units offer free immunization clinics for students who do not have a doctor or an Ontario Health Card.

I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions and if there is any follow up to your question/situation.
