Hi Settlement,

Unfortunately, my wife and I are divorcing, and I (Canadian) have sponsored her (British) and she has a Canadian Permanent Residency card as of right now.

Who do I notify to let them know of the current status and what will they do?

Thanks for the assistance,

Hello Proudcanuck,

Thank you for contacting us again and for sharing your current situation with us.

We can appreciate that you would be interested in this type of information.

You can find some important information specific to this type of situation in our Settlement.Org How does divorce affect my immigration status? article.

As of April 28, 2017, IRCC has eliminated the Conditional Permanent Residence rule for spousal and partner sponsorships.

However, it is important to remember that sponsors are still financially responsible for sponsored spouses/common-law/conjugal partners for a total of 3 years after they arrive in Canada, even if the relationship breaks down.

Thanks again for sharing your current situation with us.

Please feel free to let us know if you have additional questions and if there is any follow up to your situation.
