I just received my COPR and did the landing interview, having been in Canada with a valid study permit. I have not yet received my PR card. Now I want to travel outside Canada for an academic conference and by the information on the immigration website, the PR card won’t be issued till I’m gone and back. My study permit has not yet expired and that visa has not been cancelled on my passport. When coming back, Do I still need a permanent resident travel document or can I travel on the yet unexpired and uncancelled student visa?

Good question - I'm in basically the same boat & will be interested in hearing what others had to say.

1. Once you "land" CBSA then starts the process of cancelling your ETA, and TRV (if you have one) it some times takes only a day or 2 or sometimes a month. You may be surprised when you attempt to reboard your return flight and are refused board as there is no longer a valid TRV or ETA in the system. \
2. To be sure, you will either require a PRTD to fly, or return via a "land" border in non commercial vehicle.
