Sponsorship of Another Spouse

Dear Settlement.org,
I have previously sponsored a spouse, and we are now divorced. My ex-spouse never went to Canada, despite receiving a PR.
Is it the rule that it is a minimum of 3 years before I can sponsor someone else, if I choose to?
Thank you, Proud Canuck

Hello Proud Canuck,
Thank you for sharing your situation and question with us.
We appreciate your interest in this type of information.
According to this IRCC application guide on the Sponsorship process, “you may not be able to sponsor if you are sponsoring a spouse or partner but you signed an undertaking for a previous spouse or partner and it hasn’t been three years since they became a permanent resident.”
If you have more detailed questions about your specific situation you may wish to contact the IRCC Client Support Centre directly, you can do so by phone from within Canada, and via their webform.
You may also find our Settlement.Org articles about foreign divorce and marriage outside of Canada of interest. If you have any additional questions, please feel free to post them here.
We hope this information is helpful.
