Hi - My son is already in Ontario, Canada would pursue 12th standard starting Sep'23 (on study permit) in York region. Late, this year he would also apply for University graduation programs. Since he is on study permit , please advise me possible scholarship/grants/loans to cover his university graduation fees.

Thanks in advance.

Hello,

Thank you for sharing your situation and question with us.

You can find some detailed information regarding OSAP eligibility in our Settlement.Org articles Who is eligible for the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP)? and What kinds of financial help can I get for my education? This guide prepared by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada also contains information on how to choose where to study, how to apply to post-secondary schools and the steps to apply for a study permit.

It may help to look at the college/university website for scholarships and bursaries they provide. NewYouth.ca has an article with possible leads for scholarships and bursaries listed from colleges and universities all over Ontario, I hope it's a helpful read!

You might also wish to encourage your son to seek out the help of a guidance counsellor if he still needs to do so. Guidance counsellors in high schools are equipped to help students navigate their post-secondary options.

We hope this information is helpful. If you have any follow up questions, please feel free to post them to the discussion forum here.

Sincerely,

Your Settlement.Org team

Hi Harry,
It’s great to hear that your son is already on track to complete his 12th grade in Ontario! Regarding financial support for university education, there are a few options available for students on a study permit in Canada:
  1. Most universities in Ontario offer scholarships for both domestic and international students. Some scholarships are merit-based, while others are need-based. I recommend checking the specific university websites for their scholarship sections. Additionally, organizations like ScholarshipsCanada and NewYouth.ca provide useful resources for finding available scholarships and bursaries for international students.
  2. OSAP provides financial aid for eligible students. While it's typically geared toward domestic students, international students on study permits may have limited access. It’s worth exploring OSAP’s eligibility criteria further on their website or by speaking with a university financial advisor.
  3. While international students aren’t eligible for government loans in Canada, private lenders may offer student loans. Some banks and credit unions have specialized student loan programs for international students, but they may require a co-signer who is a Canadian resident.
  4. Depending on your son's study permit conditions, he may be able to work part-time during his studies, which could help with living expenses and potentially offset some tuition costs. Many universities also offer on-campus job opportunities.
It’s also a great idea to have your son consult with his high school guidance counsellor for advice on post-secondary planning and funding options.
Best of luck to your son in his university application process!
