PR Card - What can I use as an Address in Canada?

Hi,
I would like to continue my landing in Canada/Toronto.
Since I am a newcomer to Canada, I do not have a permanent address.
I also do not have any family or friends who I can provide their address.
I read on CIC's website that for new PRs "it may be appropriate for clients to provide the address of a third party (friend, relative, service provider or a paid representative)".
Who are the service providers?
Can a UPS mailbox (the street address mailing address and not the POBox) be considered under this category?
I am planning to stay for 3 months in a hotel apartment. Can I provide the address of the hotel apartment?
But what if I don't receive the PR card before the 3 months end?
I really appreciate your response.
Thank you |

Hello,
I really appreciate your reply. Is there a list of the community service/centre or settlement service that offer this service of providing me with a mailing address? And this means I cannot use the UPS mailbox whose address is a street address and not a POBox address?
Thanks again for your assistance. |

What can I use as Proof of Funds?

Hi,
What is the best document to show as proof of funds during landing: bank statement or letter from the bank with my balance or demand draft?
Also if I use a demand draft, it should be addressed to me, right?
Thank you |

Accompanying Goods and Goods to Follow Form

Hello,
I am finding the accompanying goods and goods to follow forms very confusing to fill. For the accompanying goods form, do I need to mention everything I have with me in my suitcases including clothes? If yes, how can I assign a value to these? or should the value in this case be 0 since these are used clothes? Also for the jewelery values, should I mention the invoice values or the values based on today's gold prices?
Please help as I am finding it almost impossible to fill those forms.
Thanks |

PR Renewal Conditions

Hi,
I would like to inquire about the conditions to renew the permanent residency card.
One of the documents listed as a proof of residency in the last 5 years is Other Income Tax assessments issued by Canada Revenue Agency within the past five (5) years.
What if the person wasn't working during his stay (so he didn't have to pay income taxes) what can he submit in that case?
Is paying income taxes one of the requirements to renew the permanent residency status or is it only physical presence? |

Do I have to file Taxes?

Hi,
I landed in Canada last year and stayed for only three months. I haven't permanently moved to Canada yet. I would like to know if I have to file any taxes or do I do that only when I permanently reside there?

Immigration Application Documents

Hello,
An applicant has completed the immigration process and obtained the permanent residency a year ago. The applicant just received an email from Immigration Canada to provide them with an updated contact address for the return of original documents pertaining to the application, although no request has been made from the applicant's side. Is this a regular process? If yes, can the documents be mailed to an an address outside of Canada? Finally, what if the applicant doesn't require those original documents any more?
Thanks |

I would like to inquire about date I should be taking into consideration to determine whether the residency obligation to maintain a permanent resident status.
Is it the date on landing (date a person become a PR) or the date of expiry mentioned on the PR card?
Thank you |

Moving my Belongings to Canada

Hello,
I completed my lading in Canada last year for the first time. At that time, I prepared the accompanying goods and the goods to follow forms however they were not stamped as I was informed that I should only do that when I move permanently.
I visited Canada again this year and now I am moving permanently.
I would like to know what should be the process of moving my belongings now?
Is it still subject to duty exemption?
Thank you. |

Thank you for the response. Do the taxes and duties apply only on the goods to follow or the accompanying goods as well? So if we assume that the goods to follow form doesn't get stamped next time I travel to move permanently and I decide not to ship anything later, will duties apply on the clothing I take with me?

Hello,
Thanks for sharing your situation and questions with us.
It is best that you contact the Border Information Services (BIS) representatives directly, stating your situation and that the officer at the time of landing stated that it would not be stamped until you move permanently.
There is some confusion because from some information we have received previously, from some Border Information Services (BIS) representatives, in some cases, if it is not stamped at the time, the exemption on taxes may be forfeited.
They have previously stated that it is up to the officer. Additionally they said that if the officer is not satisfied or convinced that what you are presenting was to have originally been included on a Goods to Follow list, then you may be subject to the tax and duty.
In the event that you have to pay, you will have to pay 13% tax on the used value of the items. They stated that when allocated a used value to your items, you may want to think of it in terms of how much you would be able to sell it for at a garage sale. That is the amount you should allocate to your used items.
An additional 9.5% duty on the used value of any furniture. The amount of duty on other items such as used clothing and textiles can vary depending on where they are made. The duty can be from 0 to 20% of the used value.
Again, we suggest that it is best that you contact the Border Information Services (BIS) to explain your situation in detail and for some clarification on your specific situation.
You can contact them at:
1-800-461-9999
I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions and if there is any follow up to your question/situation.

OHIP Application

Hi,
I am moving permanently to Ontario from outside Canada.
Given that there is a 3 months wait time for OHIP,
I am planning to apply for OHIP as soon as I arrive.
I know that one of the application requirements is a document that displays the name and current home address.
However, I plan to stay the first two months in an extended stay hotel until I find a place to rent.
What should I do in this case?
Thank you. |

Permanent Residency Proof

I moved to Canada and I am currently living with a friend, therefore there is not a house rent contract or utilities bills in my name.
Will this be an issue later on when renewing the PR or applying for citizenship or this is not required as a proof of physical presence in Canada? |
