In Canada or Outside Canada Sponsorship?

I (Canadian) currently live in China with wife and son who are American.
I have been out of Canada for 15 years but need (and want) to return because of family emergency in Ontario.
I am at a loss on how to get my wife and son into Canada.
I will not immediately have a job but will have free place to live and will be financially stable.
The problem is whether to start the application from outside Canada and then move to Canada.
Or move to Canada and start the application once there?
We have to be back in Ontario in about 2 months.
Also can my son go to school while we wait for residence status (which I have read can be as long as 26 months!).
My wife would like to be able to visit her family in the US, will she be able to do this while waiting for Residency?
Lastly, US citizens can stay in the US for 6 months, if my wife and son are waiting longer than that for their application can they remain in Canada longer than 6 months or do they have to return to the US?
