I came to Canada as a student and I got my health care card from University. If you happen to arrive in Canada, I highly suggest going to the nearest Service Canada office to get your care card. Every person entering in Canada needs to pay for MSP whether you are a PR, Citizen or a temporary foreign worker. Apart from basic health coverage, you can also get extended health coverage from third-party companies. These companies will cover expenses like dental, eye surgery etc. There are some insurance policies that cover some of the costs of giving birth - however, you would have to purchase this insurance before your wife is pregnant.
