SIN - Do I need to cancel it?

Hello,
Thank you for sharing your situation and question with us.
We previously contacted the Service Canada - (Social Insurance Number line) directly for some information on this type of situation.
They stated that SIN numbers may be flagged as dormant when there is no activity recorded with the number for more than 5 years.
According to them, in these cases, you can still use your SIN number however, you cannot use it for the online services.
If your SIN does go dormant and you want to use the online services of Service Canada, in order to re-activate it, they suggested that you will have to go into the nearest Service Canada office and complete a questionnaire from the SIN Registry that they will provide.
You may want to contact Service Canada directly for some information specific to your situation.
Regarding your tax information we suggest that you may want to contact the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) directly.
I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions and if there is any follow up to your question/situation.

Hello Poojen,
Thanks for sharing your questions with us.
It is great that you are looking into your options before making your permanent move to Canada.
One thing you may want to do is to visit bank or online job posting web sites for information about the skills banks and financial institutions are looking for in the people that they hire. This information will also tell you about the kind of educational background that you need to do the work.
Most occupations related to finance and investment are not regulated in legislation in Canada. However, most employers require a bachelor's or master's degree in business administration, economics, or finance.
You may want to read additional information on some professions that are related to your education and experience here:
Financial and Investment Analysts
Securities Agents and Investment Dealers, Traders
Financial Managers
You may want to consider getting your international education evaluated, to see how it compares to Canadian expectations. You can find out more in this Settlement.Org Why should I get my international educational credentials evaluated? article.
You can find a list of the major Canadian Chartered Banks here:
Canadian Chartered Banks
You may also want to consider looking into loan and trust companies in Ontario:
Loan and Trust Companies
You may also want to look at the Toronto Financial Services Alliance (TFSA) for additional information.
Their "Related Sites" section has many links to other relevant associations and training/education links.
Once you move permanently, you'll want to get some help in your job search. There are many organizations that can help you to find work in your field and help you to become familiar with the Canadian job search culture. You can find out more about the job search in our Finding a Job section.
It may also be helpful to read about some of the options available to you in the community in this Why should I get help to find work? article.
Many new immigrants are having a long and difficult time getting established in their chosen occupations. It may be helpful for you to read some previous discussion threads such as this Difficulty finding a Job discussion thread.
I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions and if there is any follow up to your question/situation.

Hello,
Thank you for sharing your additional questions with us.
Regarding your address history, from the information we have previously received from a CIC representative, you have to include this address in your Canadian address in your "address history" and any new addresses, only if your address in Canada officially changed. They stated previously that the information regarding your addresses outside Canada will likely be documented in your "Travel History" section.
Please note that this is the information that we have received previously from the CIC Call Centre .
From the information we have received previously from some CIC representatives, you only have to include the time you spent outside Canada on each exit. You can include the country you entered and the time you spent outside Canada. So it applies to each time you exited Canada.
If for example, you entered several countries during the same absence outside Canada, you do not have to list all. Just the time you spent outside Canada during that period.
It seems that currently, what the CIC Call Centre is suggesting is that you provide as much as you can to the best of your ability.
However, it is really important that you contact the CIC Call Centre directly to see if they can provide you any information and if they can confirm if this information applies in your situation or for some information specific to your situation.
We strongly suggest that you try to contact the CIC Call Centre directly to see what they suggest regarding these portions of the application.
I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions and if there is any follow up to your question/situation.

Buying Condo and SIN

Hello,
Thank you for sharing your question with us.
You can find some detailed information regarding the use of your SIN and who can ask for your SIN on the Office of the Privacy Commissioner website.
Here is an excerpt,
The Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) sets out ground rules for how private sector organizations may collect, use or disclose personal information in the course of commercial activities.
Since January 1, 2001, the Act applied to personal information about customers or employees that is collected, used or disclosed by the federally-regulated sector in the course of commercial activities. It also applies to information that is sold across provincial and territorial boundaries. As of January 1, 2004, the Act covers the collection, use and disclosure of personal information in the course of any commercial activity within a province, including provincially-regulated organizations, except in provinces that have enacted legislation that is deemed to be substantially similar to the federal law.
Under the new law, organizations like banks, telecommunications companies and airlines cannot require you to consent to the collection, use or disclosure of your personal information unless it is required for a specific and legitimate purpose.
This means that unless an organization can demonstrate that your SIN is required by law, or that no alternative identifier would suffice to complete the transaction, you cannot be denied a product or service on the grounds of your refusal to provide your SIN.
If you disagree with a request for your SIN made by an organization that is subject to the PIPEDA, you can complain to the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, who will investigate the complaint.
According to a representative at the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, the SIN is not used as a piece of or proof of ID. They stated that generally companies requesting it are involved in commercial activities and must identify the purpose of the collection of the SIN. You should feel free to ask the question related to the purpose of the collection of the SIN. If you do not find their reasons to be reasonable you may file a complaint with the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada .
They also stated that large corporations must have a privacy officer and ensure that they are following privacy law.
It may be helpful to look at the condo developer's website to find out what their privacy policies are and how to contact their privacy officer.
You can send any questions or concerns to them or ask for clarification as well.
I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions and if there is any follow up to your question/situation.

Can I evict my Ex-Partner?

Hello,
Thanks for sharing your situation with us.
You can find some helpful information in this Sharing Rental Housing webtool from Community Legal Education Ontario (CLEO).
Here is an excerpt,
"You are considered a "licensee" and the person who rents the place to you is a "licensor". The law of landlord and tenant does not apply. Neither the Commercial Tenancies Act nor the Residential Tenancies Act applies to you. The law about licensees is mostly judge-made law.
A licensee has a limited right to occupy the premises for a limited period of time. The courts will look at many factors to determine whether a person is in a landlord-tenant relationship or a licensor-licensee relationship. There is no simple test. Two common situations when you would likely be considered to be a licensee are:
*if you share a house or condominium unit (including a bathroom or kitchen) with the owner or their child, parent, spouse, or their spouse's child or parent
*if you rent a room in a house, apartment or condominium unit from a person who is a tenant living there, and you share the space with that person.
As a licensee you have very little legal protection. You can be evicted:
*without notice if you don't pay rent; or
*with notice for any reason or even for no reason. The amount of notice required is usually equal to your rental period (often one week or one month).
It is often a good idea to get a written agreement before moving in. You should include in this agreement what will happen if you want to move out or if the person you rent from wants you to leave. If there is a dispute between you and the person you rent from, and you cannot settle it between yourselves, you may have to go to court. Depending on the type of dispute, you may be able to go to Small Claims Court or the Superior Court. It is very unlikely the court would stop you from being evicted, but you may be entitled to monetary compensation in some situations."
We suggest that it is important that you contact the nearest Community Legal Clinic for some additional information.
I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions and if there is any follow up to your question/situation.

Hello Brad,
Thank you for sharing your situation and question with us.
You can find some detailed information regarding getting an Ontario Driver's Licence in our Settlement.Org I have a driver's licence from another province in Canada. How do I get an Ontario driver's licence? article.
Regarding your question about fines and violations in other provinces, many provinces have reciprocal agreements. For example, Ontario has a separate agreement with other Provinces and Territories called the Canadian Driver’s Licence Compact.
According to the Government of Alberta website in the When Drivers Move From One Province to Another section,
The Canadian Driver Licence Compact is an agreement among all Canadian provinces that sets out guidelines for the way provinces administer drivers’ licences and records when drivers move from one province to another.
If you have any questions about the tickets and violations you received out of Ontario and would like to see how it could affect you in Ontario, please contact the department of the MTO:
Licensing Administration Office Ministry of Transportation Main Floor, Building A 2680 Keele Street Downsview, ON M3M 3E6
