Hello,
Thank you for sharing your situation and question with us.
We can appreciate that you would be interested in this type of information.
Regarding your questions about your husband's vehicles,
According to Transport Canada,
Section 7(1)(b) of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act (MVSA), allows a visitor to temporarily enter Canada with a motor vehicle without complying with the MVSA if the vehicle is used only by a visitor to Canada or a person passing through Canada en route to another country.
Notes:
- You alone may use the vehicle.
- Any change in your status, such as receiving permanent residency in Canada, may make your vehicle inadmissible and you will be required to export or destroy it.
- You may not sell or gift the vehicle while in Canada.
- The vehicle cannot remain in Canada longer than the time limits allowed under your temporary entry.
and
My status has changed from temporary to permanent resident while in Canada with my vehicle. How does that affect my vehicle?
If your vehicle is eligible for importation, you will need to formally declare the vehicle along with your personal effects to the Canada Border Services Agency and fulfill all import requirements. If your vehicle does not comply with the Motor Vehicle Safety Act, you must export or destroy it when your temporary entry status becomes permanent.
Notes:
- Temporary residents and visitors cannot sell or donate their vehicle while in Canada
- Your vehicle cannot remain in Canada for a period longer than the time limits listed on your work permit, student visa or any other Customs authorization.

Hello Eli,
Thank you for sharing your situation and question with us.
In terms of applying for Ontario Works, you can find some information in this Sponsorship Breakdown booklet.
Here is an excerpt,
What will happen to my sponsor?
The federal and provincial governments have the right to sue your sponsor to get money for your support (see also page 36). If you’re collecting welfare benefits, the provincial government’s policy is to require your sponsor to pay back all the money you received in welfare benefits.
If your sponsor won’t support you for the time they promised and you have to go on welfare, they won’t be allowed to sponsor other family members unless they pay the government all the money that the welfare ministry gave you.
You may want to contact the nearest Ontario Works office for some information.
In terms of subsidized housing, there are some municipalities that consider subsidized housing as social assistance when it comes to those who have been sponsored.
You may need to contact the subsidized housing providers directly for specific information.
You can find some detailed information in our Settlement.Org Am I eligible for subsidized housing? and How can I apply for subsidized housing? articles.
I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions and if there is any follow up to your question/situation.

Hello,
Thank you for sharing your daughter and wife's situation and questions with us.
We can appreciate that you would be concerned about this situation.
As you already know, in order to return to Canada, if they do not have a valid PR Card, it is likely they will have to apply for a Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) at the nearest Canadian Visa Office.
Starting this process will also start the process to determine whether or not they have lost their PR status.
You can also find some information related to your daughter's situation in this previous Settlement.Org Am I Still A Permanent Resident? Discussion Thread.
We strongly suggest that it may be helpful for you to contact a lawyer who is familiar with Canadian immigration issues for some additional information and assistance with their situation.
I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions and if there is any follow up to your question/situation.

No air conditioning - Rights?

Hello,
Thank you for sharing your situation and question with us.
We can appreciate that you would be concerned about this situation.
If you are in Toronto, the City of Toronto By-law states,
Air conditioning (maximum temperatures)
Air Conditioning should go on, if provided/supplied by the property owner, from June 2nd to Sept. 14th to maintain an indoor temperature of not more than 26 degrees Celsius. Municipal Licensing & Standards is unable to take any action outside of these dates.
If an air conditioner is broken, a landlord is required to either fix it or replace it. There is no requirement for a landlord to install an air conditioner. For issues regarding request from landlord to tenant to remove an a/c unit, tenant should check lease agreement to see if any restrictions exist. This issue doesn't fall under Property Standards bylaw.
It is best if you contact the nearest Community Legal Clinic for some information specific to the area or city where you live.
I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions and if there is any follow up to your question/situation.

Can I Drive with my UK Licence?

Hello,
Thank you for sharing your situation and question with us.
We can appreciate that you would be interested in this type of information.
If you plan on living in Ontario - that is, you will be a permanent resident living in Ontario - you need to get an Ontario driver's licence within 60 days of moving to Ontario.
You can find some detailed information in our Settlement.Org I have a driver's licence from another country. How do I get an Ontario driver's licence? article.
Here is an excerpt,
You may be able to exchange it for an Ontario driver's licence. The type of licence you can get depends on how much driving experience you have and if the country has a reciprocal agreement with Ontario.
and
Countries With a Reciprocal Agreement
Some countries, like the United States, Australia, France and Korea, have an agreement with Ontario which allows licensed drivers to obtain an Ontario licence without having to go through the regular process for obtaining a licence in this province.
If you have a driver's licence from one of these jurisdictions with Licence Exchange Agreement, you can benefit from this privilege.
The type of licence you can get depends on how much driving experience you have. You follow the same process as drivers with a licence from another Canadian province and from Canadian Forces - Europe.
Read about the Licence Exchange program on the DriveTest website to learn more about the process and the documents required.
You may want to contact DriveTest at their Toll Free Number 1-800-489-8450 to speak to a Customer Service Agent to find out what your options are in this situation.
I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions and if there is any follow up to your question/situation.

Noise levels
Moderator

Hello,
Thank you for sharing your question with us.
According to one of our Housing Experts, as long as the children’s noise is “reasonable” the Code protects tenants from any harassment or threats of eviction. In terms of what is reasonable, again, there isn’t any precise definition of this, however, it basically means that the noise is what you would expect of a child of that age.
Under the Residential Tenancies Act, as far as we know, there really is no definition of reasonable noise, but the Human Rights Code over-rides the Residential Tenancies Act.
The danger with going to the Landlord and Tenant Board on this issue is that the adjudicators are a bit hit and miss with respect to their understanding of the Human Rights Code.
The adjudicator may not properly interpret the Code.
Therefore, it is probably best to try to resolve the situation before any tribunal hearing.
You may want to contact the nearest Community Legal Clinic for additional information.
There is also an organization that works specifically with equality rights and housing. You may want to contact the Centre for Equality Rights in Accommodation for additional information on what your rights are in this situation.
I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions and if there is any follow up to your question/situation.

Tax on personal effects

Hello,
Thanks for sharing your situation and questions with us.
According to some Border Information Services (BIS) representatives, it is possible that due to the length of time since landing, the exemption on taxes may have been forfeited.
Again, it is up to the officer and they stated that if the officer is not satisfied or convinced that it was to have originally been included on a Goods to Follow list, then you may be subject to the tax and duty.
In the event that you have to pay, you will have to pay 13% tax on the used value of the items. They stated that when allocated a used value to your items, you may want to think of it in terms of how much you would be able to sell it for at a garage sale. That is the amount you should allocate to your used items.
An additional 9.5% duty on the used value of any furniture. The amount of duty on other items such as used clothing and textiles can vary depending on where they are made. The duty can be from 0 to 20% of the used value.
Again, if you need to contact the Border Information Services (BIS), you can contact them again directly for some additional information on your specific situation.
You can contact them at:
