University Tuition Fees

Hello,
Thank you for sharing your situation and question with us.
We can appreciate that you would be interested in this information.
As you may already know, each school (college or university) can decide on admission requirements and select which students to accept.
Generally, you can apply to a college or university in 1 of these categories:
"Domestic" student - You are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
International or "Foreign" student - You are not a Canadian citizen or permanent resident. You will need a study permit.
As you may already know, international students must pay a higher tuition rate for college and university programs. In some cases, the tuition is double or triple the amount that domestic students pay.
As you can see, the criteria is whether or not you are a Canadian Citizen or a Permanent Resident. It does not state whether or not you are a resident for tax purposes as the criteria.
You can find some additional and helpful information in our Settlement.Org How do I apply for admission to a university or college? article.
I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions and if there is any follow up to your question/situation.

Renewing PR and SIN card
Moderator
|
Hello Harry,
Thank you for sharing your situation and question with us.
We can appreciate that you would be concerned about this.
Regarding your question,
I wanted to know, for renewing my PR card, do I need to be physically present in Canada ?
You cannot apply to renew a PR card from outside Canada.
According to the ENF 27 Permanent Resident Card manual,
R56(2) states clearly that a PR card application must be made in Canada.[...]The CPC may refer a case to a local CIC if all or part of the application originated from outside Canada, and if there are questions as to the client’s identity, status or residency history, or the authenticity of the documentation. Clients must report in person to pick up their card in Canada, in accordance with R58(3).
Regarding your question,
Can't I file the PR renewal application(IMM5444E) 2-months before going to Canada ie in April or May 2017 ? and upon reaching collect my card.
As stated in the previous reply, you cannot apply to renew a PR card from outside Canada.
Regarding your question,
My aunt lives in Vancouver, can I provide her address in the application form ? And later collect it from her ?
Yes, you can. You are required to provide a Canadian Address.
Regarding your question,
The CIC website states that I need to mail/courier the IMM5444E form to Sydney, Nova Scotia(http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/offices/canada/sydney.asp) !! Is it the only choice I have, even If I decide to renew the PR card while physically being present in Canada.
Yes.
You submit your application by regular mail to:
Case Processing Centre — PR Card P.O. Box 10020 SYDNEY, NS B1P 7C1 CANADA
You submit your application by courier to:
Case Processing Centre – PR Card 49 Dorchester Street Sydney, NS B1P 5Z2
Regarding your questions,
I need the PR card to be renewed when I return to Canada, So that I can apply for reactivating my SIN card. This way I can try to find work as soon as possible. And reactivating SIN card is not possible without a PR card. I've read(on this website) that PR takes more than 93 days to get renewed and sometimes upto 6 moths, how will I manage to stay without work for such a long time, If I need to be physically present in Canada to renew it :/
By the way, How long does it take to renew a SIN card ?
We have contacted the Service Canada - (Social Insurance Number line) directly for some information on this type of situation.
According to a Service Canada Representative, yes, it may be the case that your SIN has a "dormant" flag in your file. In these cases, you can still use your SIN number however, you cannot use it for the online services.
They stated that SIN numbers may be flagged as dormant when there is no activity recorded with the number for more than 5 years.
In order to re-activate it, they suggested that you go into the nearest Service Canada office and complete a questionnaire from the SIN Registry that they will provide.
You will be asked to present some identification such as a Canadian Birth Certificate, Canadian Citizenship Card/Certificate, PR Card, Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) etc.
You may want to also contact Service Canada - (Social Insurance Number line) directly to verify this information and for some information on this your situation.
I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions and if there is any follow up to your question/situation. ===== Anna Settlement.Org Content and Information/Referral Specialist, CIRS Settlement.Org |

Immigration PR residency definition vs OAS
Moderator

Hello,
Thank you for sharing your situation and question with us.
We can appreciate that you would be interested in this type of information.
In terms of your residency requirements, according to an Old Age Security (OAS) Information Service representative, as long as your permanent address is in Canada and you are still a considered a resident for tax purposes you are considered as a resident of Canada for this purpose. In other words, you are temporarily outside Canada and you maintain your residential ties with Canada.
For question #14, they stated that it is important that you include all trips outside Canada of more than 6 months.
Additionally, Canada has social security agreements with many countries. If you lived or worked in one or more of these countries, these agreements may help you meet the residence requirements to qualify for the OAS.
We suggest that you contact the Old Age Security (OAS) Information Service to confirm this information and for assistance completing the forms. You can contact them here:
Canada and the United States : 1-800-277-9914 All Other Countries:1- 613-957-1954 (Collect calls accepted) TTY: 1-800-255-4786 (from Canada and the United States)
(Have your social insurance number ready when you call.)
