Penalties for Breaking a Lease

Hello Adrian,
Thank you for sharing your situation and question with us.
You may be able to find some helpful information on breaking a lease in our Settlement.Org How can I end my tenancy early? article.
It is not clear what the "safety deposit" of $200 is referring to.
According to the Landlord and Tenant Board website,
Can a landlord ask for a deposit for keys?
Yes, but only if:
-the deposit is refundable and, -the amount of the deposit is not more than the expected cost of replacing the key(s) if they are not returned to the landlord.
The landlord must give the deposit back when the tenant turns in their key(s) at the end of their tenancy.
and
Can the landlord charge the tenant a damage deposit?
No. A landlord cannot collect a damage deposit that they would use if there is damage done to the unit. Also, a landlord cannot use the last month’s rent deposit to cover damages in the unit.
If the landlord finds that a tenant has damaged the unit or caused damage to the building, the landlord can give the tenant a notice and/or ask them to pay for the damages. If they do not, the landlord can apply to have the Board determine if there are damages and what should be done about them. For more information about the remedies available to a landlord if a tenant causes damage, see the Board’s brochure on Maintenance & Repairs.
We suggest that you may want to contact the nearest Community Legal Clinic for some assistance and additional information specific to your situation.
I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions and if there is any follow up to your question/situation.

Hello,
You are very welcome!
Thank you for sharing your question and situation with us.
You can find some helpful information on what the requirements to become a paramedic in Ontario are on the a Region of Peel website in the Becoming a Paramedic - Education and Training section.
Here is an excerpt,
Becoming a paramedic involves a 4 step process.
STEP 1: Successfully graduate from a certified Ontario college Paramedic Program with a Paramedic diploma.
STEP 2: Upon completion of your Paramedic diploma, graduates must successfully pass the provincial certification exam (Advanced Emergency Medical Care Attendant).
STEP 3: Now being a provincially licensed AEMCA you may apply to work in an EMS service. Peel Regional Paramedic Service requires that all potential Paramedic recruits partake in the Centralized Paramedic Competency Recruitment Testing.
STEP 4: Upon employment, new Paramedic recruits must successfully complete a certification exam by our local base hospital physician at Sunnybrook Osler Centre for Pre-Hospital Care. This is to allow Paramedics to perform delegate medical acts under the doctor’s authority.
You may want to contact the nearest Employment Service for some assistance and information regarding what your options are.
Most Employment Services provide career planning and career counselling.
You mentioned that you are a nurse, you may also find some helpful information in our Alternative Jobs section.
I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions and if there is any follow up to your question/situation.

Service Providers making copies of my PR card

Hello,
Thank you for sharing your situation and question with us.
We can appreciate that you would be concerned about this. It is true that it is really important to be aware of how our personal information is being used.
From the information we have received from some of our settlement workers in various settlement agencies, the purpose of making the copies of the PR cards is mainly for the agencies' protection. This type of information is generally required in the event the agency is audited. This way, at audit time, there is proof of the numbers of clients the agency is stating that they are serving.
If you are not comfortable with having your PR card photocopied and stored, you can state that to the organization whose service you are interested in accessing.
If you are not comfortable with having your PR card photocopied and stored, it is not likely that you would be denied service or turned away.
I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions and if there is any follow up to your question/situation.

Hello,
Thank you for sharing your situation and questions with us.
According to some Border Information Services (BIS) representatives, it is very important to provide your B4 Goods to Follow list at the time of landing.
According to them, if you do not or if you did and did not include everything on your list. It is possible that the officer may not be satisfied or convinced that you intended to provide it at the time of landing or that the items you would like to bring in were intended to have originally been included on a Goods to Follow list, then you may be subject to the tax and duty.
You will have to pay 13% tax and 9% duty on the used value.
Goods that arrive later will only qualify for duty- and tax-free importation under your entitlement as a settler, if they are on your original list.
You may want to contact a Border Information Services (BIS) representative directly for some information on your specific situation.
You can contact them at: 1-204-983-3500 1-506-636-5064 (Long Distance charges will apply)
Regarding immunizations, in Canada, immunization or vaccination records are required for children to enroll in school.
The Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) website states, "When you travel to Canada, bring official documents that state what vaccinations you and your family have already had. If you or your child has not been vaccinated, call your doctor or local public health clinic right away."
I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions and if there is any follow up to your question/situation.

Elementary School Enrollment in November

Hello,
Thanks for sharing your question with us. It is great that you are looking into this type of information before your arrival.
According to one of our Education Experts, it is possible to start school in the middle of the school year or semester.
Students can start school at any time but starting in the middle of the school year or semester might make it difficult to get credits for the courses he or she is studying. In terms of credits, they generally apply more to higher grades like middle or high school grades.
Again, it is possible to start school in the middle of the school year or semester.
Since your children are in elementary school, in terms of extra work or homework, it may be something that you may want to discuss with your children's teachers once they are enrolled and begin attending school. It may help to have a discussion with them to find out if and what is needed for your children to catch up.
I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions and if there is any follow up to your question/situation.

Mechanical Engineer - Questions

Hello Cijo,
Thanks for sharing your situation and questions with us.
As you may already know, some jobs, like engineers, are regulated in Ontario. This means you need a licence. It can take some time to get a licence. You can find some detailed information on the process on the Ontario Immigration - Working in Ontario website in the Engineering section.
You might want to work in a non-regulated job in your field first. Just like you mentioned, it can be a good way to use your related skills and also, at the same time, get Canadian work experience.
You can find some information on working in your profession on the Ontario Immigration - Working in Ontario website in the Engineering section.
On this Ontario Immigration - Working in Ontario , you can find more information in the Career Map: Engineer section about every step ofthe registration process, including language requirements, industry trends, labour market conditions, the credential assessment process, licensing fees andother important information.
You will also find information on internship and bridging programs available on the Ontario Immigration - Working in Ontario website.
Unfortunately, there is no guarantee that you will find employment in the engineering field upon arrival in Ontario.
However, you may want to connect with the nearest employment service that works with foreign trained professionals including engineers. You can find some helpful information in these Settlement.Org What are bridging programs for internationally-trained professionals and tradespeople? and Where can I find job skills training programs? articles.
You may also want to contact some agencies that provide programs specific to engineering before you arrive. Many of them have information and referral specialists or employment counsellors you can speak to.
You can find some listings of settlement agencies in our Services Near Me section.
To find some information related to salaries and cities where there are positions available in your field, you can find some information on the Job Bank website. This website used to be called the Working in Canada website.
I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions and if there is any follow up to your question/situation.

Hello,
Thank you for sharing your situation and question with us.
It is good that you are looking into this type of information before arriving.
We have had some other users share some estimates of costs for c-sections based on their own experiences.
You can find some information in one of our previous Settlement.Org discussion threads.
You may find it helpful to read I am pregnant and don't have OHIP. What health care can I get?.
An excerpt from this is:
Having a baby without OHIP coverage can be a very expensive and stressful experience. If you do not have OHIP or other insurance coverage, hospitals can charge you what they want, including amounts above OHIP prices.
The hospital may ask for your financial information or how much money you have and set their fees based on that information. It is impossible to say definitively how much pregnancy services without OHIP will cost, as hospitals assess each case differently.
If you have private health insurance, your insurance company may pay for some of the costs. However, some insurance policies do not cover pregnancy-related costs.
You may also wish to read similar threads in our forum, such as:
Giving Birth in Ontario: How much does it cost?
OHIP Coverage; about to arrive and pregnant
We have also had one of our users' experiences and suggestions posted regarding costs in this previous Settlement.Org Pregnancy Cost discussion thread. (It is from 2005, but may give you an idea of costs.)
I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions and if there is any follow up to your question/situation.
