Hi there,

Thank you for sharing your question and situation, we appreciate your reaching out.

You can find some important information and supports in our Settlement.Org article here, Where can I get help for domestic abuse?

You can get help in an emergency, in a crisis, or anytime that you experience abuse. Here are some possible avenues to receive help:
  • Call the police for emergency protection.
  • Go to a hospital or tell your doctor.
  • Call a telephone crisis line for assaulted persons.
  • Contact a settlement agency.
  • Contact a community information centre.
  • Speak to a social worker or counsellor.
  • Go to a shelter.
In case of emergency, you can reach Emergency Police by calling 9-1-1 or look online for local emergency phone numbers.

The Public Health Agency of Canada has a list of resources and services for men and boys experiencing intimate partner violence. StepstoJustice also has a list of free to low-cost legal services supporting people experiencing family violence some of which will not have an income requirement.
You may also dial 211 on a phone for free and speak to an Information and Referral Specialist who may be able to refer you to some other supports and resources.

Hi there,

Thank you for sharing your question and situation with us.

In terms of self-employment, you may find helpful information in the following thread: Can I be self-employed as an international student?

Here is an excerpt:
Self-employment, such as running your own small business, would be considered as “off-campus work”. Starting and running your own small business as an international student, i.e., conducting off-campus work, is possible provided that you have the required authorization and meet all prerequisites.

First, the conditions of your study permit must authorize you to work off-campus during your studies.

An international student is eligible to work off campus without a work permit so long as they:
  • have an explicit authorization on their study permit authorizing them to work off campus;
  • are a full-time student at a designated learning institution (a school that is approved by provincial or territorial government to host international students); are enrolled in a post-secondary, academic, vocational, or professional training program OR a secondary-level vocational training program (Quebec only);
  • are enrolled in a study program that is at least 6 months long and leads to a degree, diploma, or certificate
  • have started studying and are actively engaged in pursuing their study program; and
  • have a Social Insurance Number.

  • If an international student is a part-time student at a designated learning institution, they can only work off campus if they (1) meet all the above requirements, except for the requirement to be studying on a full-time basis because (2) they are only studying part-time because they are in the last semester of their study program and do not need a full course load to complete the program. The international student must have been a full-time student in their program up until their last semester.

If the study permit does not explicitly grant authorization to work off-campus and an international student met all the criteria at the time of the initial study permit application, they can ask to have this authorization added by applying to amend the terms of the study permit. There are no fees involved in submitting the application. However, if a student’s study program has changed and they are now eligible to work off-campus, then they must apply for a new study permit and fees will apply.

Second, you must not work more than the authorized hours of work per week.

During term time, international students can work off campus up to 20 hours a week and full-time during regularly scheduled breaks.

However on October 7, 2022, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada announced that international students are authorized to work more than 20 hours per week during term time until December 31, 2023 if they hold a study permit that authorized them to work off-campus that was either (1) issued before October 7, 2022 or (2) was applied for before October 2022 and they met all the eligibility criteria to work off-campus noted above.

Third, respecting and tracking compliance with employment authorization

If you are working off campus as a self-employed individual, you are responsible for keeping track of the hours you work off campus and for proving that you are complying with the conditions of your study permit.

Hours are calculated as any time you spend doing any of the following:
    • earning wages
    • being paid wages for performing a service or selling a product
    • collecting a commission for performing a service or selling a product
Eligibility for a Post Graduate Work Permit (“PGWP”)

Being self-employed should not affect your eligibility for a PGWP as long as you respected the terms of your off-campus work authorization and can submit documentary evidence as such if requested.

    Hi there,

Thank you for sharing your question and situation with us.

According to IRCC's Guide 5772 – Application to Sponsor Parents and Grandparents if you were invited to apply, you’ll want to submit your application by the deadline in your invitation to apply letter. You can check if you were invited to apply using their invitation status tool. If the tool says you were invited, but you didn’t get an email to the account you put on your 2020 Interest to Sponsor form, make sure you check your spam and junk mail folder, and check your physical mail – if IRCC couldn’t email an invitation, they would send it by mail to the address you put on your 2020 Interest to Sponsor form.

For advice regarding your application, you may want to speak to a reputable and registered immigration consultant or an immigration lawyer.

    Hello,

Thank you for sharing your situation with us.

We can appreciate that you would be concerned about this.

You may find helpful information in the College of Physicians and Surgeons Ontario's Policy on Uninsured Services, Billing, and Block Fees Here are a few relevant excerpts:

Physicians must also consider the patient’s ability to pay when charging for uninsured services, individually or by block fee, charging for appointments that are missed or cancelled without the required notice, and collecting outstanding balances. In particular, physicians must consider:
    • the financial burden that these fees might place on the patient and whether it would be appropriate to reduce, waive, or allow for flexibility on compassionate grounds; and
    • granting exceptions for appointments that are missed or cancelled without the required notice when it is reasonable to do so (e.g., first or isolated incident, intervening circumstances, etc.).
    [...]
Physicians may take action to collect any outstanding fees owed to them, but must do so in a professional manner and in accordance with privacy legislation.
Physicians who are considering ending the physician-patient relationship due to an outstanding balance must comply with the expectations set out in the Ending the Physician-Patient Relationship

If you would like to submit a complaint regarding a doctor, you may want to contact the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario directly. You can find some information about this process in the CPSO guide: Learn About Our Complaints Process.

Being trafficked can cause severe trauma and survivors often need intensive, specialized services and supports to help them heal and rebuild their lives.
Survivors in Ontario can access services from a range of community-based and Indigenous-led organizations across the province, many of which also work to prevent at-risk people from being trafficked.
Indigenous survivors can access supports designed by and for Indigenous people, including counselling, cultural programming, addictions treatment and leadership development services.
