Canada’s entry requirements are changing
Permanent residents (PR) of Canada must carry and present their valid PR card or permanent resident travel document (PRTD) when boarding a flight to Canada, or travelling to Canada on any other commercial carrier. If you do not carry your PR card or PRTD, you may not be able to board your flight, train, bus or boat to Canada.

Returning by private vehicle
There are other documents you can use to enter the country.
When you return to Canada, apply for a PR card if you plan to travel outside Canada again.
Some examples of private vehicles include, but are not limited to: a car, truck, motorcycle, or recreational vehicle that you own, borrow, or rent, and that is not available for public use.
Returning by commercial vehicle: airplane, bus, train, or boat
You must apply for a permanent resident travel document (PRTD), valid for one entry. Otherwise you may not be able to travel to Canada.
You can apply to replace your PR card when you return to Canada.

Hello,
Thank you for sharing your situation and question with us.
Generally, the expiry date is one year from the time medical exams were completed.
The expiry date will appear on the visa.
As you may already know, she has to land in Canada before that expiry date.
It is really important to verify the expiry date as soon as she receives her Canadian Immigration Visa.
I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions and if there is any follow up to your question/situation.

Hello,
Thank you for sharing your grandmother's situation with us.
You may want to look into some information on her behalf regarding the option of getting an Ontario Photo Card.
You can find some details and lists regarding which documents are required in order to apply for the Ontario Photo Card.
There is some very helpful and detailed information in our Settlement.Org What kind of ID can I get, if I don't have a driver's licence? article.
Here is an excerpt,
The Ontario Photo Card is government-issued identification (ID) that you can get instead of a driver's licence.
If you don't have a driver's licence, you may be able to show other ID, such as a passport, PR Card, or a health card.
If you don't want to carry these sensitive ID documents around with you, the Ontario Photo Card may be a good option for you.

Hello,
Thank you for sharing your situation with us.
We can appreciate that you would be interested in this type of information.
When it comes to fulfilling the residency requirements, it has no correlation with the expiry date on the PR Card. The fact that a PR Card has expired does not mean that a person has not fulfilled their residency requirements.
It is important to note that you do not lose your permanent resident status the instant your Permanent Resident Card expires.
It is important to note that in terms of loss of permanent residency, a person does not lose it until a final determination has been made.
We suggest that it is best that you contact the school board directly for some information.
You may also want to contact the nearest Settlement Agency for some assistance with registering your daughter.
I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions and if there is any follow up to your question/situation. ===== Anna Settlement.Org Content and Information/Referral Specialist, CIRS Settlement.Org |

Schools for my children
Moderator

Hi there, Thank you for your message. I understand that you must be anxious about your children’s education. As you may have noticed, Settlement.Org is a website for newcomers living in Ontario. Because of this, we are not able to provide a lot of information about other provinces. However, we have included some basic information below. The following information is from the Immigration Quebec website: Procedure for applying for admission In order for your child to attend a school, you must first apply for admission at your local school board. You will be required to provide originals or certified copies of the following documents: - Certificat de sélection du Québec (CSQ - Québec Selection Certificate)
- Confirmation of permanent resident status (issued by Canadian authorities)
- Passport
- Birth certificate
- Report cards, if any.
Depending on the situation, either the school board or the parents register the child. If you are required to register your child, the school board will provide you with the necessary registration forms and the contact information for the school.
Each year, school boards issue a public notice regarding admission applications. The registration period begins in February or in March, for the school year beginning a few months later, usually at the end of August. Although you can apply at any time, it is generally recommended that you register your child for preschool (kindergarten) before the end of June.
There are special considerations for children to attend school in English. You can find information about this on the Quebec Ministry of Education website and the English School Boards Association website. I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions and if there is any follow up to your question/situation. ===== The Settlement.Org team |

Can I get my PR status back?
Moderator
|
Hi Harry, Thank you for your question. I understand that this situation can be confusing.
As you know, there is a residency requirement for Permanent Resident Status. Since you have been away from Canada for so long, you will not have met this requirement.
However, your PR status needs to be formally removed. The following is from the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website
Losing your permanent resident status does not happen automatically. You cannot lose your permanent resident status simply by living outside of Canada long enough that you don’t meet the residency requirement. Unless you have gone through an official process, you have not lost or given up your permanent resident status, even though you may not be eligible to return to Canada as a permanent resident. You may lose your permanent resident status if: You may lose your permanent resident status in one of the ways described above if:
- you do not live in Canada for two out of five years;
- you are convicted of a serious crime and told to leave Canada; or
- you become a Canadian citizen.
You do not lose your permanent resident status if your PR card expires.
We would recommend that you contact Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) about your options for returning to Canada. You may need to apply for a new visa or enter through another immigration pathway in order to be eligible to regain your PR status.
I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions and if there is any follow up to your question/situation. ===== Julia Settlement.Org Team |

What grade will my children be enrolled in?
Moderator

Hello,
Thank you for sharing your situation and question with us.
Generally in elementary schools in Ontario, children are placed in a grade according to their age as well. For secondary schools, students will have to take an assessment that will determine the right grade for them.
You can find more information on Settlement.Org’s articles on “Which grade will my child enter when we move to Ontario?” and “How is my child assessed to start school in Ontario?”
You can also go to a community agency that will help to register the children. Ask your family members to bring along the children’s previous report cards or even textbooks from their previous school. This will help the agency to assess and register the children properly. You can find a Newcomer Reception Centre in your area to get more help.
Here are some resources that can provide more information on school systems in Ontario:
I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions and if there is any follow up to your question/situation.

Permanent Resident Card - Not Received Yet

Hi there,
Thank you for your question. I understand that this process can be frustrating.
You are taking the right steps by checking in with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) about the status of your PR card.
You can check the current processing times for PR cards on the IRCC website.
If you are worried that your PR card was lost in the mail, you may want to fill out a Solemn Declaration Concerning a Lost, Destroyed or Never-Received Permanent Resident Card.
According the IRCC website, you can fill out this form if you have: Provided your Canadian mailing address when you became a Permanent Resident and have not received your Permanent Resident Card at least six weeks after the processing time; I hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have further questions and if there is any follow up to your question/situation.
